Kenya

Located in eastern coast of Africa, the Republic of Kenya lies on the equator with the Indian Ocean to its southeast. It is bordered by Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia and has a diverse multi-ethnic population representing 42 different peoples and cultures.

The country is named after Mount Kenya which is the second highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro. An extinct three and a half million year old volcano, Mount Kenya boasts three permanently snow-capped peaks and is now a world heritage site.

Kenya has tremendous geographical diversity – from soaring mountains to flat desert landscapes and low plains that rise to highlands. It also has equatorial forests, savannahs, ancient granitic hills and beaches. A considerable area of its land is devoted to wildlife habitats.

North Star programs take students on an exploration of Kenya’s natural landscape, with the option of taking part in on-going community service programs for orphans of HIV.
